Extraction Method Comparison

Truckmount Wand 900 sqft/hr
Truckmount Rotary 1100 sqft/hr
Portable / Box Unit 800 sqft/hr
Self-Contained 1300 sqft/hr
Encapsulation 1700 sqft/hr

Rates based on ISSA and IICRC extraction standards. Soil level significantly impacts actual throughput. Dry foam (9000 sqft/hr) excluded from chart — commercial use only.

How to Use This Calculator

1. Enter the total carpet area. Measure or estimate the square footage of carpet to be cleaned. Exclude hard floor areas.

2. Select your extraction method. Each method has a different production rate. Truckmount wand is the most common residential method. Encapsulation is popular for commercial maintenance.

3. Set the soil level. Light soiling runs at baseline speed. Heavy and extreme soiling cuts your effective rate significantly — plan accordingly.

4. Add stairs if applicable. Each stair adds 2 minutes of manual cleaning time on top of the area-based estimate.

How the Formula Works

The calculator uses ISSA and IICRC extraction rate data as a baseline, then adjusts for soil conditions.

Adjusted_Rate = Method_Rate / Soil_Multiplier

Cleaning_Time = (Carpet_Sqft / Adjusted_Rate) x 60 min

+ Stairs x 2 min each

+ 10 min setup/teardown

Price = (Total_Time / 60) x Billable_Rate

Soil multipliers: Light (1.0x), Moderate (1.2x), Heavy (1.5x), Extremely Soiled (2.0x). Heavy soiling effectively cuts your throughput in half compared to light maintenance cleaning.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does carpet cleaning cost per square foot?
Carpet cleaning costs $0.25-0.40/sqft for light soiling, $0.35-0.55/sqft for moderate, $0.50-0.80/sqft for heavy, and $0.80-1.50/sqft for extreme soiling. The extraction method, soil level, and number of stairs all affect the final price.
What is the best carpet cleaning method?
Truckmount hot water extraction is the gold standard for residential carpet cleaning, producing the deepest clean at 900-1100 sqft/hr. Encapsulation (1700 sqft/hr) is faster and better for commercial maintenance. Self-contained units (1300 sqft/hr) work well for apartments and high-rises where truckmount access is limited.
How long does it take to clean 2000 sqft of carpet?
With a truckmount wand at moderate soil, 2000 sqft takes about 2.5-3 hours including setup. Encapsulation is faster at about 1.5 hours. Heavy soiling doubles the time. Always add 10 minutes for setup/teardown and 2 minutes per stair if applicable.
