How to Use This Calculator

1. Enter the area dimensions. Measure the width and length of the surface to be tiled in feet.

2. Enter the tile size. Set the tile width and height in inches. Common sizes include 12x12, 6x6, 12x24, and 4x4.

3. Select grout joint width. Standard is 1/8 inch for most tiles. Larger joints need more grout.

4. Set your tile cost. Enter the per-tile cost from your supplier. The calculator handles the rest.

How the Tile Formula Works

The calculator divides the total area by the area of each tile to get the base tile count, then adds 8% for cuts and waste. Grout quantity is estimated based on joint width and total joint linear footage.

Total_Area = Width_ft x Length_ft

Tiles_per_SqFt = 144 / (Tile_W x Tile_H)

Total_Tiles = Area x Tiles_per_SqFt x 1.08

Labor = Area x 0.75 + 1.0 (setup)

How many tiles do I need per square foot?
The number of tiles per square foot depends on tile size. A 12x12 inch tile covers 1 square foot, so you need 1 tile per sqft. A 6x6 tile covers 0.25 sqft, so you need 4 tiles per sqft. Always add 8-10% for cuts and waste.
How much grout do I need?
Grout quantity depends on tile size, grout joint width, and total area. For standard 12x12 tiles with 1/8 inch joints, plan on about 1 gallon per 60 square feet. Larger joints or smaller tiles require significantly more grout.
What is the standard grout joint width?
Standard grout joint width is 1/8 inch for rectified tiles and 3/16 inch for standard tiles. Larger format tiles often use 1/16 inch joints. Rustic or handmade tiles may use 1/4 inch or wider joints for a traditional look.
How long does it take to tile per square foot?
