How to Use This Calculator

1. Enter project area. Measure the patio, walkway, or driveway area in square feet.

2. Select paver size. Choose from common paver dimensions. The calculator converts to square feet per paver automatically.

3. Set waste factor. Use 10% for straight rectangular layouts, 15% for standard patterns, and 20% for complex curves or borders.

4. Choose base depth. 4 inches for walkways, 6 inches for patios, and 8 inches for driveways that support vehicle traffic.

How the Paver Formula Works

The calculator uses standard hardscape material calculations:

Pavers = Area / Paver_sqft x (1 + Waste% / 100)

Base Material (yd3) = Area x Base_Depth / 324

Sand Layer (yd3) = Area x 1 / 324

Paver Weight = Count x 9 lbs

Base Weight = Base_yd3 x 1.5 tons

The number 324 comes from the conversion factor: 27 cubic feet per cubic yard times 12 inches per foot. A 1-inch layer over 324 square feet equals exactly 1 cubic yard.

Every paver installation needs three layers: compacted gravel base for structural support, a 1-inch sand setting bed for leveling, and the pavers themselves. Skipping or shortcutting the base layer leads to settling, shifting, and callbacks.

When Landscape Pros Use This

Bidding hardscape projects. Get accurate paver counts and material volumes before quoting. Knowing the exact gravel and sand quantities prevents under-ordering or over-spending.

Ordering materials. Calculate everything in one place: pavers, base gravel, and setting sand. Place one order for all materials and coordinate a single delivery.

Planning equipment and labor. The weight estimates help determine if you need a skid steer, how many dump truck loads to plan for, and how much crew time to allocate for material handling.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many pavers do I need?
Divide your project area in square feet by the square footage of each paver. A standard 12x12 paver covers 1 sq ft, a 16x24 covers 2.67 sq ft. Add 10-15% for cuts and breakage on straight layouts, or 15-20% for complex patterns.
How much base material do I need for pavers?
Standard installation requires a 4-6 inch gravel base plus 1 inch sand. Calculate base as: Area x Depth / 324 = cubic yards. A 200 sq ft patio at 6 inches needs about 3.7 cubic yards of gravel and 0.6 cubic yards of sand.
What is the recommended waste factor for pavers?
For straight, rectangular layouts, add 10% for waste. For diagonal patterns or borders, add 15%. For complex curves, circles, or intricate patterns, add 20%.
How much do pavers weigh?
The average concrete paver weighs about 9 pounds each. A 200 sq ft patio using 12x12 pavers weighs roughly 1,800 lbs in pavers alone. Add the weight of gravel base (1.5 tons per cubic yard) and sand layer.
