How to Use This Calculator

1. Choose your measurement method. Enter the total lawn area in square feet, or enter length and width separately if the area is rectangular.

2. Set your waste buffer. Use 5% for simple rectangular lawns, 10% for curved edges and typical residential lots, and 15% for complex landscapes with islands, tree rings, and tight curves.

3. Enter sod cost (optional). Enter the price per roll from your sod supplier to get a material cost estimate for the job.

How the Sod Formula Works

The calculator uses standard sod industry coverage rates:

Area_With_Waste = Area (sq ft) x (1 + Waste% / 100)

Rolls = Ceiling(Area_With_Waste / 10)

Pallets = Area_With_Waste / 450

Weight = Rolls x 12.5 lbs (average)

One standard sod roll is 16 inches wide by 24 inches long, covering approximately 2.67 square feet per piece. Rolls are typically bundled at 10 square feet each. A pallet holds about 45 rolls covering 450 square feet.

Sod should be installed within 24-48 hours of delivery. Order based on your installation schedule and have enough crew to lay it quickly, especially in hot weather.

When Landscape Pros Use This

Estimating new lawn installations. Walk the property, measure the areas, and get an accurate pallet count before calling the sod farm. No more guessing and paying for extra delivery trips.

Building customer quotes. Show the homeowner exactly how much sod is needed and what it costs. Transparent material quantities build trust and close jobs faster.

Coordinating delivery logistics. Knowing the total weight helps plan equipment needs. A full pallet weighs 1,500-2,500 lbs and requires a forklift or the sod farm's delivery truck with a built-in unloader.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much sod do I need?
Measure your lawn area in square feet (length x width). Divide by 10 to get the number of standard rolls, or divide by 450 for pallets. Add 5-10% for waste depending on layout complexity. For example, 2,000 sq ft with 10% waste needs 220 rolls or about 4.9 pallets.
How many square feet does a pallet of sod cover?
A standard pallet of sod covers approximately 450 square feet. Each pallet contains about 45 rolls, with each roll covering 10 square feet (16 inches wide by 24 inches long). Pallet sizes can vary by supplier, so confirm coverage with your sod farm.
How much does sod weigh?
A single roll of sod weighs approximately 10-15 pounds when freshly cut. A full pallet weighs between 1,500 and 2,500 pounds depending on moisture content and soil type. Plan for delivery access and have enough crew to move pallets quickly.
How much waste factor should I add for sod?
For simple rectangular areas, add 5% waste. For curved edges and angled cuts, add 10%. For complex landscapes with many obstacles, islands, and tight curves, add 15%. It is better to have a few extra rolls than to run short and delay the job.
