How to Use This Calculator

1. Select your paint type. Latex and oil-based paints have fundamentally different drying chemistries. Latex dries by water evaporation; oil-based dries by oxidation.

2. Enter current conditions. Temperature and humidity are the biggest factors. Low temperature and high humidity dramatically slow drying.

3. Set ventilation level. Good airflow speeds drying. Fans, open windows, or HVAC circulation all help.

4. Read the results. Use "Recoat Time" to plan your next coat. "Full Cure" tells you when the paint reaches maximum durability.

How Drying Time Works

Dry_to_Touch = Base_Time x Temp_Factor x Humidity_Factor x Ventilation_Factor

Recoat_Time = Dry_to_Touch x 1.5 to 2.0

Full_Cure = 14 to 30 days (latex) or 30 to 60 days (oil)

Paint dries in stages: tacky, dry to touch, recoatable, and fully cured. "Dry to touch" means the surface is no longer wet. "Recoatable" means another coat can be applied without lifting or wrinkling the first coat. "Full cure" means the paint has reached maximum hardness and durability.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does paint take to dry?
Latex paint is dry to the touch in 1-2 hours and ready for recoat in 2-4 hours at standard conditions (70 degrees F, 50% humidity). Oil-based paint takes 6-8 hours to touch and 16-24 hours to recoat. Cold temperatures, high humidity, and poor ventilation can double or triple these times.
What temperature is too cold to paint?
Most latex paints should not be applied below 50 degrees F. The paint may not cure properly and can crack, peel, or remain tacky. Some specialty latex paints work down to 35 degrees F. Oil-based paints can handle slightly lower temperatures but still perform best above 50 degrees F. Check the can label for the specific product minimum.
Can humidity affect paint drying?
Yes, humidity significantly affects drying time. At 80% or higher humidity, paint can remain tacky for hours longer than normal. Ideal painting humidity is 40-60%. If humidity is above 70%, consider using a dehumidifier indoors or waiting for better conditions outdoors. High humidity can also cause paint to sag and drip.
How long should I wait between coats?
For latex paint, wait 2-4 hours between coats at standard conditions. Oil-based paint requires 16-24 hours between coats. The recoat time is longer than the dry-to-touch time because the paint needs to cure enough to accept another coat without lifting or wrinkling. The manufacturer label is the final authority on recoat time.
