Roof Area Calculator

Converts roof footprint area to actual sloped area using pitch correction factor. Shingles and underlayment are priced per actual slope area, not flat footprint.

How to Use This Calculator

1. Enter your building dimensions. Measure the building footprint length and width at ground level. If the building is L-shaped, calculate each rectangle separately and add them together.

2. Select the roof pitch. If you do not know the pitch, use a pitch finder app or measure the rise over a 12-inch run on the rafter. Common residential pitches are 4/12 to 8/12.

3. Choose the roof type. Gable roofs have two sloping sides. Hip roofs slope on all four sides. Gambrel and mansard roofs have two different slopes on each side.

4. Read your results. The calculator shows the actual sloped roof area and converts it to roofing squares (1 square = 100 sq ft) for material ordering.

How the Pitch Correction Formula Works

When you measure a roof from the ground, you get the horizontal footprint. But shingles and underlayment cover the sloped surface, which is always larger than the flat footprint. The pitch correction factor accounts for this difference.

Pitch_Factor = sqrt((Rise^2 + 12^2) / 12^2)

Actual_Roof_Area = Footprint_Area x Pitch_Factor

For a 6/12 pitch, the factor is 1.118 — meaning the sloped area is about 12% larger than the footprint. At 12/12 (a 45-degree roof), the factor is 1.414 — the sloped area is 41% larger. This is why steep roofs cost significantly more to install.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate roof area from footprint?
Multiply your building's footprint area by the pitch correction factor. For a 6/12 pitch, the factor is 1.118 — so a 2,000 sq ft footprint becomes 2,236 sq ft of actual roof area. The steeper the pitch, the larger the correction factor.
What is a roof pitch correction factor?
A pitch correction factor converts flat (horizontal) measurements to actual sloped measurements. It is calculated as the square root of (rise squared plus 144) divided by 12. Common values: 4/12 = 1.054, 6/12 = 1.118, 8/12 = 1.202, 12/12 = 1.414.
How many roofing squares is my roof?
One roofing square equals 100 square feet. Divide your total sloped roof area by 100 to get squares. A 2,500 sq ft roof is 25 squares. Always round up when ordering materials to account for waste and cuts.
Does roof type affect the area calculation?
Yes. Gable roofs are the simplest to calculate. Hip roofs have additional triangular sections that can add 5-10% more area. Complex roofs with dormers and valleys require on-site measurement for accuracy. This calculator provides a gable-equivalent estimate.
