Roof Ventilation Calculator

Calculates required net free ventilation area for attic spaces. Determines soffit and ridge vent sizing per IRC 1:150 and 1:300 rules.

Typical: 18 sq in/ft. Check manufacturer specs.

How to Use This Calculator

1. Enter your attic floor area. Measure the total attic footprint in square feet. For multi-level homes, calculate each attic space separately.

2. Select vapor barrier status. If a proper vapor barrier is installed on the warm side of the ceiling, the code-required ventilation ratio drops from 1:150 to 1:300. Most newer homes have one; older homes often do not.

3. Choose your ventilation system. A balanced soffit + ridge system is the gold standard. The calculator splits required ventilation 50/50 between intake and exhaust for balanced airflow.

4. Check ridge vent NFA. The default is 18 sq in per linear foot, which is standard for most ridge vents. Check the manufacturer spec sheet for your specific product.

How the Ventilation Formula Works

The IRC requires a minimum net free ventilation area (NFVA) to prevent moisture buildup and heat accumulation in attic spaces. The calculator determines the total required NFVA and splits it between intake and exhaust vents.

Total_NFVA = Attic_Area / Ratio (150 or 300)

Intake_NFVA = Total_NFVA / 2

Exhaust_NFVA = Total_NFVA / 2

Ridge_Length = (Exhaust_NFVA x 144) / Ridge_NFA_per_ft

Soffit_Length = (Intake_NFVA x 144) / 15

The 144 multiplier converts square feet to square inches. Continuous soffit vents typically provide 10-18 sq in per linear foot; this calculator uses 15 sq in/ft as a conservative estimate. Always check the actual NFA rating on your specific vent product.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much ventilation does my attic need?
IRC code requires 1 square foot of net free ventilation area (NFVA) for every 150 square feet of attic floor area (1:150 ratio). If you have a vapor barrier installed, the ratio drops to 1:300. A 1,200 sq ft attic without a vapor barrier needs 8 sq ft of total ventilation area.
What is the 1:150 ventilation rule?
The 1:150 rule means you need 1 square foot of net free ventilation area for every 150 square feet of attic space. This is the default requirement per IRC Section R806.1. With a qualifying vapor barrier, the requirement relaxes to 1:300. Ventilation should be balanced between intake (soffit) and exhaust (ridge).
How many soffit vents do I need?
Calculate your total required NFVA, divide by 2 for balanced ventilation, then divide by the net free area per vent. Continuous soffit vents provide about 10-18 sq in per linear foot. A 1,200 sq ft attic needs about 576 sq in of soffit intake, or roughly 38 linear feet of continuous soffit vent.
