How to Use This Calculator

1. Enter your roof area in square feet. This should be the actual sloped area, not the building footprint. If you only have the footprint, use the Roof Area Calculator first to apply the pitch correction.

2. Read the results. The calculator shows exact squares, rounded-up squares for ordering, and the number of bundles needed at both 3 and 4 bundles per square.

3. Order materials. Always use the rounded-up number. Ordering partial squares means buying extra bundles anyway, and you always need a few extra for waste and starter courses.

How Roofing Squares Work

The roofing industry prices everything in squares. One square equals 100 square feet of roof area. When a supplier quotes shingles at $120 per square, that means $120 per 100 sq ft of coverage.

Roofing_Squares = Roof_Area_sqft / 100

Bundles_Needed = Roofing_Squares x 3 (standard shingles)

Labor is also quoted per square. A crew charging $300 per square on a 25-square roof means $7,500 in labor. Knowing your exact square count is the foundation of every roofing estimate.
