Shingle Material Takeoff
Calculates total shingles, underlayment, nails, and ridge cap needed for a roofing job. Includes waste factor by roof complexity.

Verify quantities with your supplier for your specific shingle product. Waste factors are industry best practice but may vary by manufacturer and installer experience.

How to Use This Calculator
1. Enter your roof area. Use the actual sloped area, not the building footprint. If you need to convert, use the Roof Area Calculator first.
2. Select roof complexity. Simple gable roofs waste the least material. Each valley, dormer, and hip adds cuts that increase waste. Be honest about complexity to avoid coming up short on materials.
3. Choose your shingle type. This affects the bundles-per-square calculation. Standard 3-tab and architectural shingles use 3 bundles per square.
4. Enter total ridge and hip length. This determines how many ridge cap bundles you need. One bundle covers about 35 linear feet of ridge or hip.
How the Takeoff Formula Works
Material takeoff starts with the roof area and adds a waste factor based on complexity. Simple gable roofs add 8% waste. Complex roofs with multiple valleys and dormers add up to 17%.
Total_Material = Roof_Area x (1 + Waste_Factor)
Squares = Total_Material / 100
Bundles = ceil(Squares) x 3
Underlayment_Rolls = ceil(Squares / 4)
Ridge_Cap_Bundles = ceil(Ridge_Length / 35)
Nails_lbs = ceil(Squares) x 2.5
The waste factor accounts for starter courses along eaves, cuts around valleys and penetrations, damaged pieces during handling, and the fact that partial bundles still count as full bundles when ordering.
